What is Required? (by Pastor Jake)

Before we begin to quote scripture, let us be reminded that the God who called Abraham, the God of Isaac and Jacob, the God who delivered Abraham, Isaac and Jacob’s children out of the bondage of Egypt is the same God that raised His Son from the dead and established His “Church;” and He has not changed!

What does God wantWhat He required of His congregation He also requires of His people today.

Somewhere along the way Christians got the idea that what the Church leaders require of them is the same as what God requires. It is sad to say, too often this is just not so!

Most of what is practiced in the modern churches is according to the traditions of men. And that which is not of “tradition” is usually some notion of what the members of the modern church should be doing, saying or wearing in order to please their Creator.

The people of Israel did much the same thing and this is what Jesus said to them.

“He was also saying to them, ‘You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition’.”

Mark 7:9 [NASU]

Well—as we said in the beginning, He has not changed!! We are without excuse!! He has told His people what is good, but we have set it aside to do our own good thing.

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God”?

Micah 6:8 [NASU]

God has shown His people what is “good.” The law is overflows with what is good, but we have set aside the law saying, “We are no longer under the law.” Yes, we are no longer under the “law of sin and of death;” for by His grace we who believe He as set free from that law (Romans 8:1-4); but are we to obey His commandments?

He has said,

“Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the LORD’S commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good”?

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 [NASU]

What does God require of His people? It seems here that He does not require of us material things, rituals and other religious behavior, but that we “fear” or reverence Him and regard Him as worthy to be seated on the throne of our soul; to highly esteem Him and serve Him with our total being; AND to KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS and HIS STATUTES which He has commanded us for our OWN GOOD.
