Psalm 103:13

Posted by: on May 8, 2016 | No Comments

The Psalmist paints an interesting portrait of God, our Heavenly Father:

Psalm 103:13

Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who 1)Psalm 103:13 Or reverefear Him.

Psalm 103:13 [NASB]

Just as a father loves his children,
So the Lord loves those who fear and worship Him [with awe-filled respect and deepest reverence].

Psalm 103:13 [AMP]

As a father has mercy on sons, the Lord had mercy on those who fear Him.

יגכְּרַחֵם אָב עַל בָּנִים רִחַם יְהֹוָה עַל יְרֵאָיו:

Psalm 103:13 [CJB]

Traditional paintings by artists such as Michelangelo often paint God in… let’s just say… a not so loving image. In fact, modern artists go so far as to depict an angry God, often with a lightning bolt in His hand, reading to destroy His people.

So then, how do we comprehend such love as expressed by the Psalmist? Look at the etymology of the word translated compassion, love, and mercy:

Let’s take a peek at another scripture that reinforces the message of Psalm 103:13 —

Zephaniah 3:17 [NASB]

The Lord your God is in the midst of you, a Mighty One, a Savior [Who saves]! He will rejoice over you with joy; He will rest [in silent satisfaction] and in His love He will be silent and make no mention [of past sins, or even recall them]; He will exult over you with singing.

Zephaniah 3:17 [AMPC]

The Lord your God is in your midst-a Mighty One Who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will be silent in His love. He will jubilate over you with song.

A Mighty One will save: He is a Mighty One, Who will save [Israel] from the enemy.

He will be silent in His love: He will conceal your transgressions with His love. So did Jonathan render: He will cover your sins with His love.

Zephaniah 3:17 [CJB]

John Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible gives us his commentary on this Word of the Lord through Prophet Zephaniah:

There is a pleonasm of joy in Christ’s heart towards His people, and so a redundancy in His expression of it; He rejoices with joy, and joys with singing; which shows how delighted He is with His people, as they are His chosen, redeemed, and called ones; as they have His own righteousness upon them, and His own grace in them; they are His “Hephzibah,” in whom He delights; His “Beulah,” to whom He is married; and it is His love of complacency and delight, which is the source of all the grace and glory He bestows upon them; see Isaiah 62:3.

Father Kissing ChildThere is no doubt that our Father God loves us.

If there is no other proof, John 3:16 (quoted in the video below) tells us that His love was so great, so expansive, and so inexhaustible that he sent Jesus to die on the cross as a sacrificial lamb.

The sin of every man… from Adam through the last man to be born on Earth… was poured upon Christ. When He cried, “It is finished!” (tetelestai in the original Greek text), our salvation was once-and-for-all complete!
